Collection: Maxi Weimann
Born in 1986, the artist Maxi Weimann explores the fetishization of everyday objects and personal memories in her drawings, paintings, photographs, installations, and sound works. She examines this phenomenon in terms of a magical possession that imbues the things, experiences, or moments to which we are attached with a special, often idealized, meaning.
This meaning becomes anchored within us like an invisible spirit: absent in outward appearance, yet always present in its effect on the individual who holds onto it.
In this series of collages, she shows Fragmented female bodies. Maxi Weimann's interventions anonymize the figures, making them appear ghostly and pervasive within the pictorial space. Abstract, playful islands of color and form do not merely complement the bodies, but rather add their own independent abstraction, sometimes destroying and censoring the narrative of the bodies, or conversely framing and emphasizing them, thus exploring and questioning the narrative relevance of the collaged elements. Overlaps with reduced, sometimes mischievously and humorously abstract elements create movement and spatial density without revealing the figures' identities.
Collage thus becomes a process that challenges our perception: What makes an object meaningful? When does it come to the forefront, when does it become a ghost that accompanies us, reminding us of our own experiences?
The works explore the tension between presence and absence, a feeling of being "in-between" and anonymity, as well as the unfamiliar within one's own (or rather, one's own) gaze, and raise questions about relevance and representation in the visual arts. The works invite us to train our perception: to focus on what we otherwise overlook, what "reminds" us yet remains foreign.
By coupling the works with the taste profiles of the wines curated by Jannis Böttger, the potential of a further level of associations, emotions, and personal memories is synesthetically evoked in the viewer, with which he can experience the collages.
